Natalia and Agatha, I just want to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed taking this class with you and seeing you each week in Office Hours. I started chanting when my oldest child went to college (11 years ago), so you have a huge jump on me even though I’ve been chanting for most of YOUR lives! I’m so excited to see young people chanting, and especially to see women! There’s a Facebook group for female chanters, so if you are on Facebook, look us up – Psaltic Sisters. Maybe someday we’ll get to meet in person, God willing. My email is jtarasidis@gmail.com.

I’ve been brainstorming about this, and here are some of the things I’ve thought of:

          Very practical stuff:
          – Everyone arrives on time, and we start on time.
          – All chanters have reviewed the service ahead of time and practiced as needed.
          – If there are any decisions to be made about the service, they’ve already been discussed and settled.
          – There are no restrictions on whose music we use.
          – People are in the pews! (We actually have pretty good attendance at Orthros at our parish, compared to some others.)
          – For me, it’s ideal to be at my own parish, because I love it and it’s home!
          – We have enough time to do what we plan to do, with no set end time.
          – I’m chanting with my favorite chanters! That could mean just one other person, or a group. One possibility is getting to chant with other women.

          The service:
          – We do the first and third odes of the canon.
          – We do the praises stichologia.
          – All or mostly English.

So I have a lot more practical stuff than service stuff!

Another question: how do we see feedback on our homework? According to our schedule, we should see feedback on our Week 2 homework by now, but how do we get that feedback?

I have the August Menaion at my house right now because I’m still organizing all the materials from TLAA. So I looked in the back and saw material for St. Cosmas Aitolos and St. Phanourios. Are they in the back because they are later additions?

Yea, mine still says “Waiting for host to start the meeting”.

Peter, when DCS has an alternate commemoration like St. Sophia yesterday, why is that happening? I have always assumed that it’s because it’s a Saint or event that is celebrated more in some places than others, or is a more modern commemoration like St. Nektarios. How does this come about, and how do we find Menaion material for more modern saints when that comes up?

It’s fixed! And thanks for the PowerPoints!

When looking at this question, one of my first thoughts was, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we had more uniformity of practice, and if it was more clear exactly what we’re expected to do?” But then I thought about how we learned that these other typika were descriptive rather than prescriptive. If a new typikon is descriptive, whose practices would it describe? Also, we’ve seen that different typika have been accepted in different regions and jurisdictions, so there’s no reason to think that a new typikon would be universally accepted. This makes me think that a new typikon might not actually bring about more uniformity, except within some specific area. Even creating a Typikon for just the Greek Orthodox Church in America might be a challenge to get buy-in, with multiple Metropolises!

I’m Jamie Tarasidis, and I chant at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Greenville, SC. I have taken a few of Sam’s classes at Trisagion School. I’ve always been interested in this one, and after just finishing the week at The Liturgical Arts Academy, I decided now is the time! We use DCS at my parish, and though I can see how the structure changes throughout the year, I don’t have any experience with the books that everything comes from, and I want to learn more.
