So, a question about the homework. For the dismissal hymns, what if the Menaion shows two dismissal hymns, each in a different tone? Which one governs the Theotokion? Or is it only of the tone of the doxastikon previously used? And I assume that the tone and theotokion stick together, that is, we select the dismissal theotokion based on the governing tone, right? You’d never use the words of a hymn in tone y to the tune of tone z, right?

Hi Paul,
When there are two saint’s dismissal hymns, the tone of the last one governs the Theotokion. So, in this case, the tone of the theotokion will be in the tone of St. Nestor’s dismissal hymn.

Is it just me or does the October Menaion pdf end at October 20th? And we should be filling out the homework for Vespers on October 26th (for the 27th)?

The Menaion page you want is 169 and following = pdf electronic page 177.
After Oct. 31, the Menaion has “additional services” for more recent saints and that part ends on Oct. 20 (Part 2) for St Gerasimos of Kephalonia.Yes, do the vespers service for Saturday night Oct 26, which liturgically begins Vespers for Oct 27.

I’m having an awful time. I don’t know how to use Google Docs or how to add answers in the spreadsheet. The answer concerning the Menaion and the page to use was helpful but I’m still not sure I’m “getting it”. Right now I’m writing things out on notebook paper.
Are we only completing the blanks indicated by the red arrows or is it all of them? Are we starting with S1 or S4? Why is “Let Thine ears be attentive on there twice? I’m really confused. Sorry. -

Hi Marie,
Start with S1. Thank you for pointing out an error in the doc! “Let thine ears be attentive” on there twice is most certainly an error. I have corrected it. We will go over everything in class, so don’t stress!
Peter
