In the hard chromatic scale, there is a difference between low ni to low pa (whole step) and high ni to high pa (4 moria). We’ll be exploring why this is a little later in the course. So far, we’ve been studying and comparing the lower part of the scale.

Thanks for your message. You are correct; there is a mistake in the score on the syllable ‘ther’ of “mother.” It should be a square to indicate a whole beat. I will work on fixing that.Regarding the notes of “set”—the extra notes you hear in the recording on the 1.5 beat ga part of the word are ornaments. In the Byzantine notation score for this hymn, these ornaments are not written out, so we did not write them out in the pictorial score. In classical scores of Byzantine notation (most scores fall into this category), ornaments are not written out and chanters learn to do ornamentation through oral tradition. This is why listening to good recordings is so important (or better yet, learning to chant next to a well-trained chanter).

Each parish tends to have their own “chant culture” that is effected by the lead chanter and the clergy. If your lead chanter can’t provide a clear answer for your, consider humbly approaching your priest to ask for guidance.
