I divided the Hymn of Ascent (In the House of David…) and was able to divide in two’s with the bar lines, except for the apostrophos with the word “for” (for there is Fire___, right after the martyria x/q). Everything before and after it can be divided by two’s. Was this correct or was the phrase “for there is” supposed to be divided into three?
My name is Adrian Araujo, and I attend St. Constantine and Helen in Wauwatosa, WI. I was raised Roman Catholic but was chrismated into the Orthodox Church this past April. Chanting was one of the aspects of Orthodox worship that I came to love right away. Although music does not come naturally to me, I wanted to learn to chant so that I could praise our Lord. I have been chanting in our church for about two months, and I am looking forward to learning to read Byzantine chant scores and becoming a proficient chanter.
Not a question, but I want to thank Dina and Amy for everything they taught us, their patience, and their valuable feedback. Have a great and blessed summer everyone!
The Voice Lab, Weeks 4 & 5, Slack TVF is missing a video for “Creaky Door Prompt. Instead of the video link, it reads: “[Insert Slack Video]”
Fr. Sebastian,
No worries. To be honest this forum format is a bit confusing. It can be a bit confusing to know if I’m replying to the correct conversation. But I’m very happy for the opportunity to be in this class.

Week 2 Quiz had this question: “The lower tetrachord in the Diatonic scale goes from Ni to Ga. the first mode is based from Pa and there is also a tetrachord from Pa to Thi.” The answer should be True.
When I look at the notes picture comparing Hard Chromatic and Diatonic Scale, the diatonic scale has scales from Pa to Thi in blue (with the bride on the right). I thought this was a perfect tetrachord and that the answer was from Pa to Thi.
I guess I’m not understanding the difference between a lower tetrachord and a perfect tetrachord.
Hi Fr. Benedict, I was christmated this past Holy Saturday. I also was a Roman Catholic and helped as a reader for a few years. I’m not sure whether we can exchange emails in this Q&A forum bout I would like to ask you questions about doctrinal differences. Your perspective as a former Catholic priest would be very valuable to me.
By the way, what order did you belong to? I grew up in Mexico and we had Franciscan priests.
Hello both Fr. Benedict and Fr. Sebastian. I’m surprised to see priests in this level class. I always assumed priests had chanting training as part of their preparation.
BTW, my dad’s name is also Sebastian 🙂
I couldn’t edit my question so I add a related question here: Why in the same scale I mentioned above all the numbers are highlighted in blue except between ga and thi?
I don’t think I can paste a screenshot but I believe there is a typo on the Thou art the Joy graph document.
The scale on the top has:
ni pa vou ga thi ke zo’ ni’I think it should be:
ni pa vou ga thi ke zo ni’I’m doing the exercise I. Parallagi: Up and Down by One. On part 5, I’m not sure what is before ni (first row, sixth column __ni).
Before ni’ comes zo, but this is a regular ni so what type of zo is it? zo”??
I understand ByzB 101 students should join the beginner voice lab and that is what I plan on doing, but could we also join the advanced ones? I think it will be beneficial even if I just join to listen.
Hi Dina, I’m planning on getting the starter kit but it would be nice to also have a PDF copy on my phone. Could I also get a copy by email?
Hello everyone! My name is Adrian. I attend St. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Wauwatosa, WI. I’m an electrical engineer, I have two kids, and I like to practice martial arts and exercise in my free time.
I was born and raised Roman Catholic in Mexico, but I was chrismated on April 11 of this year. I am completely new to chanting, but I would love to learn and chant in my church. I would also like to learn to write icons in the future.
