Me again, sorry! 🙂 Are there recordings of the entire 4th mode LIHC and Let My Prayer somewhere, on parallagi and melos, but not broken up into phrases? I found those full recordings so helpful for learning the hymns in 1st mode but I don’t see full recordings for the 4th mode hymns.

Hi, Amy – here’s my omalon question from today.

Why would a composer choose to write an oligon and ison with an omalon below them VS a petaste with a klasma? Does one signify something different with ornamentation, emphasis, or the text? An example is in Week 2: HoA 2:1, first line, “Spir–it.”

I MIGHT be following lol. I think I had wrongly assumed that the ajem in the modal signature meant “use the enharmonic scale,” — and then I look at that and see that the zo’ is relatively stable and flat.

But I think you’re saying that Grave mode isn’t always Enharmonic, and that the ajem in this modal signature isn’t saying “use the enharmonic scale for this whole hymn,” but rather, “modify ga in an enharmonic way, which means raising the vou.” And then the rest of the scale is Diatonic, not Enharmonic … which would make the zo’ unstable and would have it follow Diatonic rules. Is that right??

Hi! In Week 2, Grave Mode HoA1:2, there’s a line: “There is no Ajem on Zo’ in this hymn, but the melody never goes above Zo’ so it isn’t really needed.” I’ve sifted through all I can find in 101, 102, and 103 about the rules for Zo’ but am still struggling to track what the rules are for when Zo’ flat in Enharmonic, especially how going above Zo’ (or not) shifts things. Could you point me to what I need to review or help me understand? Sorry!

Yep, Niki is our choir director at St. Elias — and yes, it is a gorgeous church — we are so blessed.

Ugh I would LOVE to go to the workshop at St. George! I’ve been debating but sadly it’s probably not a good idea for me, health-wise. Hopefully next year.

BTW you also know my friend Levi, the chanter at St. George in Kearney, NE — that’s where I was baptized and first heard Byzantine chant 🙂

Hi! On Week 1 – Qualitative Symbols: the Syndesmos – at the bottom of the page discussing the argon, I think there’s a typo.

It says, “It’s called an argon and functions like the gorgon, but also adds a beat to the symbol after the one that the GORGON is placed upon.” It should read “…after the one that the ARGON is placed upon,” right?

Hiya. I’m Angela and I attend St. Elias Greek Orthodox Church outside of Santa Fe, NM. I’m currently unable to participate in the choir due to some health reasons. It’s such a blessing to learn about and experience Byzantine chant through these classes.
