Byz Notation Workshop – Part 1, Winter 2025
In this series of in-person, consecutive workshops, students study the foundational symbols needed to read a syllabic hymn in Byzantine notation as well as the supporting modal theory. Students will study intervallic symbols, qualitative symbols, rhythmic symbols, and symbols that indicate the mode and scale. Students study Heirmologic hymns on parallagi (solfège) and melos in the four Diatonic Modes: 1st, Plagal 1st, 4th, and Plagal 4th Modes. This online support for the workshop is only for students that missed the first workshop. Access to this class will expire on the day of the second workshop – February 8th, 2025. If you would like to keep access to these online support materials, you may do so for $25. Please note that these lessons are pulled from much bigger, systematic classes and so they may be somewhat disjointed. I didn’t want to overwhelm you with everything. It’s easier to make the connections between topics in-person.
